zinc deficiency:
Zinc - the second most common trace element in the body
The zinc stores in the human organism are relatively small, only 2-3 grams of zinc are stored by the body. However, the trace element is essential for life, but cannot be produced by the body itself. We are dependent on a continuous supply, as numerous enzymes in the body need zinc for their function.
Zinc is a real all-rounder. It is important for the immune defense, cell division, protein synthesis, for the maintenance of skin, hair and nails and also for various metabolic processes.

A secure zinc supply is a challenge
According to the national consumption study II *, 32% of men and 21% of women do not achieve the recommended daily zinc intake. Men and women aged 65 and over have the highest proportion (44% and 27%, respectively). Some foods contain zinc, but only 10–40% of it can be obtained from food. The intake is very variable and depends on many factors. Phytic acid, which occurs mainly in pulses and grains, can inhibit zinc absorption, which is particularly important for vegetarians and vegans who consume a lot of it.
Pregnant and breastfeeding women also have an additional daily requirement of 3 or 4 mg zinc.
Physical exertion is associated with zinc losses through sweat. Endurance athletes in particular often eat a diet rich in carbohydrates and tend to be low in meat and zinc. However, among other things, zinc is important for the function of the immune system 1 . Athletes could therefore benefit from zinc supplementation **.

Who has a higher zinc requirement?
  • Seniors
  • Vegetarians and vegans
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women
  • athlete
