The rowan tree (Sorbus aucuparia L.) belongs to the rose family (Rosaceae). The berries contain, among other things, vitamin C, organic acids, essential oil, tannins, bitter substances, and parasorbic acid. In alpine regions, the distillate of the rowan berry, known as rowan schnapps, is particularly well-known. In folk medicine, rowan berries are said to have beneficial effects on the kidneys, as well as on rheumatic complaints and menstrual cramps.
