Potassium iodide Lannacher 65 mg for iodine blockade after nuclear accidents, thyroid supplements with iodine
If a serious accident occurs in a nuclear facility, especially a nuclear power plant, radioactive iodine can be released under certain circumstances. This iodine has the same biological and chemical properties as the natural iodine that the body needs. The thyroid therefore does not identify the radioactive iodine as a toxic substance and stores it, which significantly increases the likelihood of thyroid cancer - especially in children and adolescents.
A proven method of preventing this risk in the event of a reactor accident is what is known as iodine blockade. Such is achieved by taking potassium iodide. The ingested iodine is stored in the thyroid gland, which is then saturated. Radioactive iodine that may be in the air after the accident in a nuclear power plant can then no longer be stored in the thyroid gland. This prevents the radiation emitted by radioactive iodine from damaging the body in the long term.
What should be considered when taking iodine tablets?
With potassium iodide Lannacher tablets, you can stock up on iodine tablets for emergencies. However, they may only be used if the responsible civil protection authorities urgently recommend taking iodine tablets after an accident in a nuclear power plant. Then it is important that they are taken at the right time in order to have the best effect - ideally just before or at the same time as inhaling the radioactive iodine or a few hours afterwards. If you swallow the potassium iodide tablets too soon or more than a day after ingesting radioactive iodine, they are ineffective and can even harm the body. Therefore, after an accident at a nuclear power plant, be sure to follow the recommendations of the authorities and doctors.
As a rule, a single intake is sufficient to set up an iodine blockade. Should further intake be required, the authorities will inform you of this as well. In general, the following information applies to use and intake:
- The intake may only take place after request by the doctor or the authorities.
- Always take the medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you.
- The tablets can be swallowed or dissolved in some liquid.
- A single dose is usually sufficient.
- In exceptional cases, the competent authority or doctor will recommend taking more tablets.
- However, tablet intake should always be limited to 1 day in newborns and to 2 days in pregnant and breastfeeding women.
For whom are potassium iodide tablets not suitable?
Iodine tablets should also be taken by pregnant women and infants to establish an effective iodine blockade – but not by people with an overactive thyroid gland and adults over 45 years of age. In the case of the latter, the risk of severe thyroid disease from taking high-dose iodine tablets is higher than the radiation risk from inhaling radioactive iodine.
