interactions

  • When taking the drug with other drugs
    • Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are using or have recently used any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription.
    • Concomitant treatment with phenytoin (medicines used to treat epilepsy and certain cardiac arrhythmias) or barbiturates (hypnotics) can reduce the effect of vitamin D3, which is due to an increased metabolism.
    • If certain diuretics (thiazide-type diuretics) are taken at the same time, there is an increased risk of hypercalcaemia because thiazide diuretics increase tubular calcium reabsorption. With long-term use, serum calcium levels should be monitored.
    • Simultaneous treatment with drugs that increase heart strength (cardiac glycosides) can increase their undesirable side effects (risk of cardiac arrhythmias). Patients receiving cardiac glycosides require medical monitoring (ECG, serum calcium levels).
    • If levothyroxine (thyroid hormone replacement) and the drug are taken at the same time, the absorption of levothyroxine may be reduced. For this reason, there should be an interval of at least 4 hours between taking levothyroxine and the drug.
    • The absorption of oral tetracyclines (antibiotics) can be reduced by taking the drug at the same time. There should be an interval of 3 hours between taking tetracyclines and the drug.
    • In the case of concomitant treatment with quinolone antibiotics, these should be administered at least 4 hours before or after taking the drug because of the risk of reduced absorption.
    • The effectiveness of vitamin D can be reduced if glucocorticoids (agents for suppressing the immune system and for certain inflammations) are taken at the same time.
    • If treatment with bisphosphonate or sodium fluoride preparations (agents against osteoporosis) and the drug are taken at the same time, these should be taken at least 2 hours before the drug because of the risk of reduced absorption.
    • Please note that this information may also apply to recently used medicines.
  • Taking the drug with food and drink
    • Foods high in phosphate, phytic or oxalic acid can inhibit calcium absorption.

Contraindications

  • The drug should NOT be taken
    • if you are hypersensitive (allergic) to calcium carbonate and colecalciferol
    • if you have been diagnosed with an increase in the level of calcium in your blood (hypercalcaemia).
    • if you have increased calcium excretion in the urine (hypercalciuria).
    • if you suffer from severe kidney problems.

pregnancy and breast feeding period

  • pregnancy and breast feeding period
    • Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using any medicine.
    • During pregnancy, the drug should only be taken after a doctor has carefully weighed up the benefits and risks, and the dose should only be used to correct the deficiency. Overdoses of vitamin D during pregnancy must be avoided because prolonged hypercalcemia can lead to physical and mental disability, narrowing of the aorta (supravavular aortic stenosis) and retinal disease (retinopathy) in the child.
    • Vitamin D and its metabolites pass into breast milk. An overdose in infants produced in this way has not been observed.

patient notes

  • Special care is required when taking the drug
    • You may only take the medicine after consulting your doctor
      • if you have previously had kidney stones
      • if you have a certain lung disease (sarcoidosis).
    • During long-term treatment with the drug, your doctor will check your serum calcium levels and monitor kidney function.
      • Monitoring is particularly important if you are elderly and if you are taking concomitant medicines that increase heart strength (cardiac glycosides) or water tablets (diuretics).
      • In the event of hypercalcaemia or signs of renal dysfunction, your doctor will reduce the dose or stop the therapy.
    • If you suffer from a certain lung disease (sarcoidosis) your doctor will exercise caution when prescribing this medicine because of the risk of increased metabolism of vitamin D to its active form. In these cases, the calcium level in the serum and urine should be monitored by the doctor.
    • If other vitamin D preparations are prescribed at the same time, the daily dose of vitamin D administered with the drug must be taken into account. Additional administration of vitamin D or calcium should be done under medical supervision. In such cases, regular medical monitoring of serum and urinary calcium levels is required.
    • If you suffer from impaired kidney function (renal insufficiency), vitamin D in the form of colecalciferol is not metabolized normally. Therefore, you should receive other vitamin D supplements.

  • Driving and using machines
    • There are no data on the effect on the ability to drive, but an effect is unlikely.
