Complements the treatment of neuropathy
- The preparation is a herbal medicine.
-
Application area
- For the relief of mild foot/lower leg pain due to chronic painful diabetic nerve damage (polyneuropathy).
- Treatment with this drug is only effective as part of a comprehensive therapeutic approach. It does not improve the nerve damage itself.
How does the active ingredient in the medication work?
The active ingredient capsaicin comes from the cayenne pepper plant. Regarding the plant itself:
- Appearance: an annual plant, about knee-high, with pointed, oval leaves on long stems at the tips of bare, somewhat sparsely branched shoots. The small, star-shaped flowers are white, long-stalked, and usually grow singly.
- Origin: Central America, now cultivated in all warmer countries.
- Plant parts used and preparations: extracts, tinctures, and ointments made from the dried fruit with seeds.
When capsaicin is applied to the skin, a pain-transmitting neurotransmitter (substance P) is released from storage vesicles at the application site. This initially causes burning pain and sensations of heat. However, since practically the entire available amount of substance P is used up at once, and the body needs some time to replenish it, the treated area is less sensitive to pain for this period. Furthermore, capsaicin stimulates blood circulation by dilating the smallest blood vessels in the skin. The resulting warmth relaxes painfully tense muscles.
