  • The medicine contains a dry extract of Ginkgo biloba leaves.
  • It is a herbal medicine used to improve age-related cognitive impairment and quality of life in mild dementia.

  • Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
  • dosage
    • The recommended dose for adults and elderly patients is three film-coated tablets twice a day.
    • The twice daily intake should be in the morning and evening.
  • Use in children and adolescents
    • There is no relevant indication for children and adolescents.
  • Special patient groups
    • There are no data on dosing in case of impaired renal or hepatic function.

 

  • Duration of use
    • The treatment should last at least 8 weeks.
    • If the symptoms have not improved after 3 months or if the symptoms of the disease worsen, the doctor must check whether the continuation of the treatment is still justified.

 

  • If you take more than you should
    • There are no known cases of overdose. You may experience increased symptoms as described in the "Side Effects" category.
    • If you have taken an overdose contact your doctor or seek medical advice as you may need medical treatment.

 

  • If you forget to take a dose
    • Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

 

  • If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

  • The drug should be taken orally. Do not take the tablets lying on your back. The tablets should be swallowed whole (not chewed) with liquid, preferably a glass of water. It can be taken independently of meals.

  • Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
  • Very common (may affect more than 1 in 10 people):
    • headache
  • Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):
    • Dizziness, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting
  • Not known (cannot be estimated from the available data):
    • Bleeding in individual organs (eyes, nose, cerebral and gastrointestinal bleeding), hypersensitivity reactions (allergic shock), allergic skin reactions (skin redness, edema, itching and rash)
  • If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. This also applies to side effects that are not specified

  • Taking with other medicines
    • Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are using, have recently used or might use any other medicines. This also includes medicines bought without a prescription.
    • Ginkgo can affect the way other medicines work. Therefore, do not take this medication before consulting your doctor,
      • if you are taking anticoagulant medicines (e.g. phenprocoumon and warfarin) or antiplatelet medicines (e.g. clopidogrel, acetylsalicylic acid and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).
      • if you are taking dabigatran.
      • if you are taking nifedipine.
    • Concomitant use of Ginkgo biloba preparations and efavirenz is not recommended; Efavirenz plasma concentrations may be decreased.

Contraindications

  • The drug must not be taken
    • if you are allergic to ginkgo biloba extract or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
    • during pregnancy.

  • If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
  • pregnancy
    • Since there is some evidence that ginkgo-containing preparations could increase the tendency to bleed, this medicine should not be taken during pregnancy.
  • lactation
    • This medicine should not be used during breast-feeding as there are insufficient studies. It is not known whether the components of the extract are excreted in breast milk.

  • Warnings and Precautions
    • Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine
      • if you have a pathologically increased tendency to bleed (haemorrhagic diathesis) and if you are being treated with blood-thinning medication.
      • if you have a history of seizures (epilepsy).
      • if an operation is planned in the next 3 to 4 days.
      • if you are taking efavirenz.
    • Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if symptoms worsen with treatment.
    • children and young people
      • There is no relevant indication for children and adolescents.

 

  • Ability to drive and use machines
    • Your doctor will tell you if your illness allows you to drive and use machines.
    • No adequate studies on the effects on the ability to drive and use machines have been performed.
