Curcuma longa belongs to the ginger family of plants and is also called turmeric. The plant is native to Southeast Asia and India. There it is cultivated and processed into spices and curry mixtures, often in combination with pepper. It is a defining feature of Indian cuisine. Traditionally, turmeric has long been used as a food in Ayurveda - for example as an ingredient in "golden milk".

Similar to ginger, turmeric has tuberous, yellow-orange, underground rhizomes. These contain essential oils and fat-soluble, secondary plant substances such as curcumin, a natural, yellow dye. After harvesting, the rhizomes are dried and ground into powder. The extract obtained from this contains a high proportion of curcuminoids, the biologically active ingredients of the turmeric plant.
