Carotenoids are yellow to reddish pigments that occur naturally in plants and certain microorganisms. They play an important role in energy transfer during photosynthesis. Furthermore, they protect these organisms from the harmful effects of sunlight. Astaxanthin, a particularly distinctive carotenoid with a characteristic red color, is produced in nature by plankton, algae, and some plants, fungi, and bacteria. The highest concentration of astaxanthin is found in the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis (which is also the source of Astamax in the Greenleaves product).

Astaxanthin enters the food chain via plankton and algae, providing the pinkish-red pigment in aquatic animals such as salmon, trout, shrimp, crab, lobster, and spiny lobsters, as well as in some birds like the flamingo. For these animals, astaxanthin acts as a vitamin-like substance. Due to its unique properties, astaxanthin is able to occupy the optimal hydrophilic (water-loving) and hydrophobic (water-repelling) positions within the lipid bilayer of cell membranes and mitochondrial membranes.

Recommended intake:
Take 1 softgel capsule per day with a meal or as recommended.

Ingredients:
Sunflower oil (Helianthus annuus), bovine gelatin (softgel capsule), Haematococcus pluvialis (green algae; contains astaxanthin), L-ascorbic acid, humectant (glycerol), stabilizer (beeswax), purified water, d-alpha-tocopherol, emulsifier (sunflower lecithin).
