The 5-HTP is obtained from the African climbing perennial Griffonia simplicifolia, more precisely from the seeds of this black bean. This bean contains up to 20% 5-Hydroxy-Tryptophan (5-HTP).

5-HTP is an intermediate product of the amino acid tryptophan in the liver, which then provides a precursor for the neurotransmitter serotonin.

5-HTP cannot be absorbed through normal diet. The natural extract, obtained from Griffonia Simplicifolia, provides the body with the bioactive form of 5-HTP, which it can best absorb.
